NAUA February Board
Meeting Report

From the Desk of Board Secretary Stephen Polmar...

Your NAUA Board of Trustees met on February 12th. Most of this meeting was devoted to the topics of planning for the 2025 Summit and Membership Support. Joyce Kinnear, Chairperson of the Summit Committee, enumerated the issues and challenges that we face in planning the 2025 Summit, both from a technology perspective and a travel perspective. To avoid the connection/bandwidth issues experienced by some online participants, a professional conference service will be engaged to ensure a high-quality online experience for the 2025 and all future Summits. In terms of travel, while all who participated last year in-person expressed strong support for a hybrid in-person and online Summit, serious concerns were expressed regarding cross-border travel arising from the current political situation in the US. In light of these as well as some other issues, the majority of the Board voted to conduct the 2025 Summit entirely online while also pursuing opportunities for in-person socially interactive events for members.

Member Services is a key function of NAUA. Rev. Todd Eklof spoke of his plans for member, fellowship and congregational support through an entity that he has tentatively called “the Church Store.” This will be operated by a committee that will include other ministers. The “store” would provide materials for services, such as music, readings, and other resources, as well as ministerial services such as pastoral care and visiting ministers. Other aspects of member, fellowship and congregational support will be provided by the Member Services Committee, chaired by Board Trustee Judi Durham.

The Member Services Committee, as well as some of the other committees formed by the Board during the January Board Retreat, are now seeking additional members. If you haven't already read the Volunteer Opportunities email sent late Monday (Feb. 24), please check it out and see where and how you might like to get more involved. A post with the email content can be found on our website.

International Alliance Study Course: "Mythology Then and Now: How Can It Inform Our Future?" Part III

March 8th, 10:00 AM PST
REGISTER NOW

Mythology has an important connection for Unitarians and others who practice free religions aligned with values of inclusivity, spiritual exploration and the search for universal truths. As myths often embody the mystery and wonder of life, this will be an opportunity to think of your mythical connection to archetypes and the hero/heroine’s journey. During our sessions we will explore how the commonality of myths has fostered interconnectedness and provides a foundation for our spiritual and religious traditions.

We welcome new participants to the third session of this five-part series, held on Zoom on the second Saturday of the month, ending in May 2025. The time is 10:00 AM Pacific Time, 1:00 PM Eastern Time, 6:00 PM UK Time and 7:00 PM Central European Time.

This discussion group will be hosted by Marga Hanna, MA, a retired Registered Clinical Counselor/Psychotherapist and Art Therapist, with experience as a University Professor and Trauma Specialist. She will be supported by Wayne Hanna, PhD., FCMC with cross-cultural experience in leadership development.

The Campbell lecture to watch for this session is “On Being Human” available on YouTube. The reading is Chapters 1 to 5 in “The Heroine’s Journey" by Maureen Murdock. (Or, if you are short on time, read her summary article.) There are also some Campbell lectures on YouTube called “The Hero's Journey” and “The Hero with a Thousand Faces” that you may be interested in watching.

If you have not registered for this study course before, please register by clicking on the 'REGISTER NOW" button above. If you have already registered, there is no need to register again.

NAUA Academy:
"Faith in Film"

Tuesday, March 11,
4:30 PM PST
REGISTER

The NAUA Academy provides courses to members of the NAUA and others interested in Unitarianism, Unitarian Universalism and Liberal Religion. March's Academy session is a tour of religious expressions, statements, or symbols in the genre of popular film from "It's a Wonderful Life" to "The Matrix." "Religious" in this context means any scene or dialogue that makes sweeping statements about the nature of the world and what it means to be human within it.

Session Leader Bio: The leader of this session is Frank Casper, a novice film lover who, for some reason, views films with an eye toward any occasion of religious depth. He has a Master of Theological Studies from Boston University and is a long-time and now former Unitarian Universalist. He lives in Atlanta GA.

February Worship Service Recording:
"Nature’s Scripture: the Interfaith Promise of Science"

February's monthly worship service addressed an oft-neglected landscape of commonality between faiths: the natural world. At precisely the time when our religious and political divisions threaten the existence of life on Earth, science offers a sweeping interfaith vista filled with revelations and insights as spiritually meaningful as ancient scriptures. Read as “scripture,” science offers a common text for all the world’s faiths. Please click on the image above to view the service recording.

Workshop: Reflecting Our NAUA Values in Communications
March 20th, 4:30 PM PST
7:30 PM EST
REGISTER

Many recent NAUA events have explored our values of Freedom, Reason and Tolerance and their meaning to each of us individually. In this workshop, we’ll explore how these values can serve as a guide to our everyday communications. How can we exercise personal freedom while also respecting the freedom of others? How can we approach people and discussions in a “reasonable” way? How can we exercise tolerance in our interpersonal communications? Do reason and tolerance have limits? We’ll discuss these and other questions in a quest to define the communication best practices that naturally emerge from our values.

This workshop will be led by three members of the newly formed NAUA Communications Committee. Board Trustee Terry Anderson has previously led an NAUA Academy session on “Color Blindness” and frequently posts videos and articles to our website and Facebook feed. Joyce Kinnear is chair of the Summit Planning Committee. Joyce also serves on the Worship Committee and has written numerous reflections for our website and Facebook feed. Joanne Krettek produces the bi-monthly “Compass" announcements email and co-chairs the Communications Committee with Terry. The Communications Committee continues to welcome new members. Please email naua-communications@googlegroups.com if you are interested in joining our team.

There will be a limit of 30 participants for this session. If there is sufficient interest or a sizable waiting list, we will repeat the workshop in the future.

Workshop: Communicating our Values
March 22, 10:00 AM PST
1:00 PM EST
REGISTER

This is a follow-up workshop to the prior workshop on “Reflecting Our NAUA Values in Communications.” However, it is not necessary to have attended the prior workshop in order to obtain value from this one.

In this workshop we reflect on how we might explain or present our NAUA values when communicating with friends, neighbors and the general public. Why do we believe in the values of Freedom, Reason and Tolerance? How should we describe their meaning to others? Some of the suggested language may be used on our website or in future communications.

Next, we’ll discuss communications within NAUA and how we can improve as an organization. How are you currently getting news about events and happenings within NAUA? What would you like to be informed about that you currently are not? How can we communicate better overall? The feedback participants provide will be helpful as we work to improve overall communications, including about our active and valuable committee work.

If you are unable to attend the workshop but would still like to share feedback about internal or external communications, please send an email to naua-communications@googlegroups.com.

"Are trees social beings? In The Hidden Life of Trees forester and author Peter Wohlleben convincingly makes the case that, yes, the forest is a social network. He draws on groundbreaking scientific discoveries to describe how trees are like human families: tree parents live together with their children, communicate with them, support them as they grow, share nutrients with those who are sick or struggling, and even warn each other of impending dangers. Wohlleben also shares his deep love of woods and forests, explaining the amazing processes of life, death, and regeneration that he has observed in his woodland."
