Mid-June 2025 Announcements & Events

North American Unitarian Association is a member service organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the practice of liberal religion by embracing freedom, reason, and tolerance—rooted in our commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of every person and all peoples.

Greetings, !

For those in the Northern Hemisphere, may you delight in the Summer Solstice and the long summer days to follow.

For all, an apology. Some of the contact emails included in the June 1st edition were incorrect. Here are the corrected ones:

  • communications@naunitarians.org (to submit suggestions for improving our website, social media pages or mailings like the Compass, to submit announcements / news for publication, or to volunteer as Film Editor or other role on our Communications Team)
  • memberservices@naunitarians.org (to volunteer to lead a regional group or request to join an existing group, to ask membership questions or share suggestions for promoting NAUA to prospective members)
  • nomcom@naunitarians.org (to suggest someone for consideration to be nominated to the NAUA board)

NAUA summarizes our values, which emerged during the Renaissance and flourished during the Enlightenment, as FREEDOM, REASON, and TOLERANCE, and considers them fundamental for any society to demonstrate respect for the worth and dignity of every person.
Let's reflect on our values prior to the fall Summit.

REASON: Every person has the capacity to reason and consider the empirical evidence before them in their pursuit of truth and understanding. Ideological dictums and religious dogmas should not be imposed upon them.

“Learning never exhausts the mind."  Leonardo da Vinci

“The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing.”  Albert Einstein

"To argue with a man who has renounced the use and authority of reason, and whose philosophy consists in holding humanity in contempt, is like administering medicine to the dead, or endeavoring to convert an atheist by scripture." Thomas Paine

“Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear.” Thomas Jefferson

Note: If you've written a poem, designed a work of art, or taken a photograph that might be a good fit for this focus on our values, please consider emailing it to jmkrettek@gmail.com. If we aren't able to use it here, we may request your permission to share it on our Facebook page or via other communications. Thanks!

Current NAUA Regional Groups:

Central Canada: Eastern British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba
Regional Leaders: Odell Havsdottir (Teresa Klostreich) and Kent Klostreich of Winnipeg, Manitoba

Wisconsin

Regional Leaders: Rev. Terry Cummings (CT), Judi Durham (CT), Rev. Stephen Sousa (MA)

If you live in one of those regions and haven't requested that NAUA "not share" your contact information, your name and email address have (or will be) provided to the regional co-leader(s). You should soon receive a communication about joining the group. If you do not receive a communication by the end of July but are interested in joining, please contact memberservices@naunitarians.org.

The Member Services Committee is still looking for co-leaders for other regions. The groups will begin on Zoom, so a little experience with Zoom would be helpful, but not essential. We will train anyone who does not feel confident. If interested, please contact NAUA Member Services at memberservices@naunitarians.org and include your location.

2025 Summit: "Building Bridges: Unity and Diversity"
Save the Dates: September 30 - October 5

Your Are Invited!

Come be a part of the Second Annual NAUA Summit from Tuesday, September 30 through the final Sunday, October 4 worship service. During the week, most workshops will be in the evening, to allow you to keep up with your busy life and still attend sessions. On Friday and Saturday, there will be workshops and NAUA's annual business meeting during the day.

The workshop offerings are expanded significantly on a variety of topics from a talent show to a discussion of Stoicism. We will have a session devoted to discussion of dissent within Unitarian Universalism, including examples such as UUMUAC, the 5th Principle Project  and other dissenting groups and voices. There will also be time for Spiritual Reflection. The NAUA Board and Committees will update you on their activities for the year and discuss the developing Strategic Plan. We will discuss what has happened since last year's Visioning Workshop and plan where we want to go in the next year. There is something for everyone!

All workshops will be online this year, using an upgraded platform that will ensure a richer, smoother experience, including:
  • The ability to create a personal profile and network with other participants throughout the Summit
  • Clear descriptions of each session and session leader, the ability to choose between simultaneous sessions and to move back and forth between sessions as desired
  • Recordings of all sessions so you can review them at a later time
  • The ability to easily provide input or feedback during sessions
  • The use of polls for voting during the annual business meeting
  • A virtual lobby for "hanging out" and interacting between sessions
  • An overall high quality technical experience with a single portal for Summit access
We are hoping the online platform will make it easier for everyone to attend one or more workshops. If you have a local group of NAUA members, we encourage you to get together during the Summit to interact and discuss information and topics.

The cost to register for all of this amazing information and activity is only $50! Registration details will be announced by mid-July.

Call for Volunteer Zoom Hosts

If you would like to help us plan or host the Summit, we'd love to hear from you. In particular, we are seeking technical volunteers to serve as Zoom hosts during the Summit. Training will be provided. Please email us at summit@naunitarians.org to let us know of your interest in any of these areas.

Thanks, and see you at the Summit!

Note: There will be no International Alliance or NAUA Academy workshop during the month of June.

The NAUA Academy Advisory Board will be meeting over the summer to plan an engaging and stimulating 2025-26 season. If you have ideas for topics or suggestions of speakers you would like to hear at an Academy Session, please email your ideas to academy@naunitarians.org.

Third Saturday Worship Service:
"Two Views on the Nature of Nature"

Saturday, June 21st, 10:00 AM PDT, 1:00 PM EDT

"The world is not a problem to be solved; it is a living being to which we belong. It is part of our own self and we are a part of its suffering wholeness. Until we go to the root of our image of separateness, there can be no healing. And the deepest part of our separateness from creation lies in our forgetfulness of its sacred nature, which is also our own sacred nature."

~ Thich Nhat Hanh

The June Sunday Service brings together the scientific view of nature, along with the mystical and spiritual view, with a sermon by Dr. Gary Nelson. Dr. Nelson's training in electrical engineering and applied mathematics encouraged views of the cosmos as mindless, meaningless matter in motion. However, his great-grandmother was Native American, and he grew up with a grandmother who was a trance medium who introduced him to a spirit guide that was a helper.

His path to a PhD was unconventional. He built and operated two “beatnik “ coffee houses, did a stint in the USAF as a computer repairman and then attended college.

He has been a student of spirituality since childhood. This presentation incorporates his interests in Vipassana Buddhism and the process philosophy of Alfred North Whitehead.

This service is arranged and organized by Doug Rodgers.

NAUA Book Club: "The Buried Giant"
June 26th, 4:30 PM PDT
The NAUA Book Club is a friendly gathering on the last Thursday of each month. All are welcome. The meeting starts at 7:30 PM (EDT) 4:30 PM (PDT).

Our June meeting features a discussion of The Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro.

"From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature and author of Never Let Me Go and the Booker Prize–winning novel The Remains of the Day comes a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory.

In post-Arthurian Britain, the wars that once raged between the Saxons and the Britons have finally ceased. Axl and Beatrice, an elderly British couple, set off to visit their son, whom they haven't seen in years. And, because a strange mist has caused mass amnesia throughout the land, they can scarcely remember anything about him. As they are joined on their journey by a Saxon warrior, his orphan charge, and an illustrious knight, Axl and Beatrice slowly begin to remember the dark and troubled past they all share.

By turns savage, suspenseful, and intensely moving, The Buried Giant is a luminous meditation on the act of forgetting and the power of memory."

Lorraine Day will lead this month's discussion. If you are interested in attending, please email Ed Hudak (bookclub@naunitarians.org).

Note: The Forum Circle, which is led by Mark Reimers and requires a reservation, is taking a break over the summer. Twice monthly meetings will resume in the fall.

Volunteer Film Editor Needed

NAUA programs create 2-4 Zoom recordings per month. These videos usually need a “light edit,” removing any obvious distractions. We also like to splice in a title slide. The videos are then uploaded to YouTube.

Once this is completed, other volunteers then link the video to the website and social media. We are not looking for professional editing, just enough to reflect the quality of the recording. If you have time, interest and a capacity to learn, this can be a rewarding commitment for both you and NAUA. Please email communications@naunitarians.org to chat with someone from the communications team.
