August 2025 Announcements & Events

North American Unitarian Association is a member service organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the practice of liberal religion by embracing freedom, reason, and tolerance—rooted in our commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of every person and all peoples.

Greetings, !

Image Caption: Do you ever feel like the cat in the image above? Sometimes you just want to be alone and grumpy but the world decides what you really need is a lesson in tolerance!

NAUA summarizes our values, which emerged during the Renaissance and flourished during the Enlightenment, as FREEDOM, REASON, and TOLERANCE, and considers them fundamental for any society to demonstrate respect for the worth and dignity of every person.
Let's reflect on our values prior to the fall Summit.

TOLERANCE: Every person, regardless of their specific ideologies and identities, should have equal standing and equal access to the benefits and protections of society.

“It is not for me to judge another man's life. I must judge, I must choose, I must spurn, purely for myself. For myself, alone.”
Herman Hesse, Siddhartha

"Laws alone can not secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.”
Albert Einstein

“Everyone on Earth, they'd tell us, was carrying around an unseen history, and that alone deserved some tolerance.”
Michelle Obama, Becoming

“Love is wise; hatred is foolish. In this world, which is getting more and more closely interconnected, we have to learn to tolerate each other, we have to learn to put up with the fact that some people say things that we don't like. We can only live together in that way. But if we are to live together, and not die together, we must learn a kind of charity and a kind of tolerance, which is absolutely vital to the continuation of human life on this planet.”
Bertrand Russell

Note: If you've written a poem, designed a work of art, or taken a photograph that might be a good fit for this focus on Tolerance, please consider emailing it to jmkrettek@gmail.com. If we aren't able to use it here, we may request your permission to share it on our Facebook page or via other communications. Thanks!

Free Religion Institute Course for August

A collaboration between the
International Association for Religious Freedom (IARF) and North American Unitarian Association (NAUA)

This course will consist of four programs in August given on Tuesday-Wednesday (depending on time zone) for four consecutive weeks. The course will trace the development of liberal religious ideas beginning in India in the early 1800’s to liberative religion as reflected by Imaoka Shin’ichro’s “Free Religion” concept in Japan. The course will be taught by Professor George Williams. Professor Williams is a retired historian of religions, having spent a lifetime studying religions that liberate. He has written and made videos about the Hindu Renaissance, religion in modern Japan, and religion in Hawaii. He is President of the International Association for Religious Freedom. He has two honorary doctorates, one from the Starr King School for the Ministry and another from the United Protestant Theological School of Cluj [Kolozsvar], Romania. He currently lives in Hawaii and is a kupuna (elder) of Kanenuiakea, a thousand-year-old indigenous Hawaiian faith.

Each lecture will be given twice per day so that members in all time zones around the world can participate in at least one session at a convenient time.

NAUA Member Services Update

NAUA Welcomes 12 New Members

We are pleased to welcome 12 new members who joined our organization in July. Two are from the Philippines, one from Canada, and the rest from the United States. We are glad you have found a liberal religious home, and we look forward to getting to know you!

While we aren't printing the names of new members for privacy reasons, we will share (anonymously) some of the comments they offered when joining NAUA:

[I'm looking forward to] "collegial relationships, continuing learning."

"I like this organization because [it's] open minded [with an] open heart."

"Supportive of the mission & vision of the organization. I am a classical Unitarian, interested in the historiography & intellectual scholarship of the movement, and looking to join like-minded people & make a public stand on behalf of my beliefs."

Welcome! Welcome! Here's to Freedom, Reason and Tolerance!

Member Services Summit Workshop

Seeking Input

In preparation for our Summit Workshop, How Are We Doing One Year Later, the Member Services Committee (MSC) has begun to gather their thoughts about what we should focus our energy on going forward. Naturally we are hopeful that we will soon be able to launch the MSC webpage, and that the number of Regional Groups will continue to grow. But we have also begun exploring other areas of focus such as programs, discussions, or activities for children and adults that guide or assist people in ethical, moral, and civic responsibility. We are living in troubled times in so many ways; not just locally or politically, but also globally. In addition, being a good steward of the earth often gets lost in the day-to-day chaos of our lives. Resultant stress levels are rising. Thus, we have begun to ask, how can NAUA be relevant to these times? What can we do to be helpful, useful, or provide support or guidance to our members?

These are some of the questions that we will be asking you in the Breakout groups during the MSC Summit Workshop on Friday, Oct. 3 (10AM PT).  If you have thoughts about any of this, and would like to share them now, we would gladly listen. Please send them to memberservices@naunitarians.org.

[Also, please contact us if you are interested in developing a Regional Group in your area.]

Your Are Invited to the 2025 NAUA Summit!

Come be a part of the Second Annual NAUA Summit from Tuesday, September 30 through the final Sunday, October 4 worship service. While most mid-week sessions are timed for North American evening participation, Friday through Sunday sessions occur throughout the day and should be viewable in most time zones. All sessions will be recorded, and those registered will receive access to the recordings for a full year after the Summit. So even if you are not available on all dates (Sept. 30-Oct. 5), it is still worth registering for later viewing. Participants will also be able to network and chat in the Zoom lobby for several days before, during and after the Summit. So you can still comment, ask questions and participate in discussions virtually on days and time zones around the Summit.

The Summit is designed for NAUA members, friends and anyone in the world who supports liberal religion. You do not need to be a Unitarian to attend!

Monthly Worship Service: "Climate Consciousness"
August 16, 10 AM PDT

Gail Sandlin will lead the August NAUA Service. She will explore our relationship with the environment and climate change as a moral and spiritual imperative. We, in the NAUA, rely on pillars of science, justice, and faith to guide us in our lives. Gail will explore how concern for a healthy environment is both fundamental for our future and inherent in our religion, building her talk around the theme of “Climate Consciousness.”

Climate Consciousness is a way of being, perceiving and responding that is shaped by spiritual insight and ethical commitment.  This service will provide a brief overview of the key elements and spiritual practices of Climate Consciousness revealed by spiritual teachers such as Richard Rohr, Matthew Fox, Thomas Berry, Thich Nhat Hanh, Dali Lama, Aldo Leopold and Rumi.

NAUA Book Club: "The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves"
August 28th, 4:30 PM PDT

Our August meeting features a discussion of The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves by Matt Ridley.

This month's discussion will be led by Ed Hudak.

If you are interested in attending, please email Ed Hudak (bookclub@naunitarians.org).

"In a bold and provocative interpretation of economic history, Matt Ridley, the New York Times-bestselling author of Genome and The Red Queen, makes the case for an economics of hope, arguing that the benefits of commerce, technology, innovation, and change—what Ridley calls cultural evolution—will inevitably increase human prosperity. Fans of the works of Jared Diamond (Guns, Germs, and Steel), Niall Ferguson (The Ascent of Money), and Thomas Friedman (The World Is Flat) will find much to ponder and enjoy in The Rational Optimist.

For two hundred years the pessimists have dominated public discourse, insisting that things will soon be getting much worse. But in fact, life is getting better—and at an accelerating rate. Food availability, income, and life span are up; disease, child mortality, and violence are down all across the globe. Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people's lives as never before.

An astute, refreshing, and revelatory work that covers the entire sweep of human history—from the Stone Age to the Internet—The Rational Optimist will change your way of thinking about the world for the better."
