Mid-August 2025 Announcements & Events

North American Unitarian Association is a member service organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the practice of liberal religion by embracing freedom, reason, and tolerance—rooted in our commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of every person and all peoples.

Greetings, !

Image Credit: Thank you to NAUA member Jon Hoskin for submitting the above image to the Compass. Jon used the AI graphic program Fooocus (https://github.com/lllyasviel/Fooocus) to create the background graphic. He added the text via Inkscape (inkscape.org), an open source graphic creator/editor program. He described the image as follows:

"Tolerance is the first step to losing your bias. Sexism is represented by the women, and different colors on the face represent racism. Even the placement of the text requires Tolerance because it feels like it's not quite in the right place."

NAUA summarizes our values, which emerged during the Renaissance and flourished during the Enlightenment, as FREEDOM, REASON, and TOLERANCE, and considers them fundamental for any society to demonstrate respect for the worth and dignity of every person.
Let's reflect on our values prior to the fall Summit.

TOLERANCE: Every person, regardless of their specific ideologies and identities, should have equal standing and equal access to the benefits and protections of society.

“Religion is like a pair of shoes.....Find one that fits for you, but don't make me wear your shoes.”
George Carlin

"Tolerance, like any aspect of peace, is forever a work in progress, never completed, and, if we're as intelligent as we like to think we are, never abandoned."
Octavia E. Butler

“Christian, Jew, Muslim, shaman, Zoroastrian, stone, ground, mountain, river, each has a secret way of being with the mystery, unique and not to be judged."
Jalal ad-Din Rumi

“I'm not out to disturb anybody's faith. I happen to be happy and comfortable with a belief system that has a dual deity and operates on a lunar schedule. It suits my needs. If you happen to be happy and comfortable with a belief system that features a single masculine deity and operates on a solar schedule, fine. What matters is what you do, not who's name you do it in.”
Mercedes Lackey, Burning Water

“Discord is the great ill of mankind; and tolerance is the only remedy for it.”
Voltaire

Note: If you've written a poem, designed a work of art, or taken a photograph that might be a good fit for this newsletter and its focus on traditional liberal values, please consider emailing it to jmkrettek@gmail.com. If we aren't able to use it here, we may request your permission to share it on our Facebook page or via other communications. Thanks!

Each CIRCLE creates a space where voices are heard, ideas are respected, and community is built. Al LaRose says it well:

“I joined NAUA after dropping out of my local UU congregation, and joined the NAUA Connection CIRCLE shortly thereafter. One of my chief pleasures in life arises from interesting and enlightening conversation. I have several good conversation and discussion groups locally, but this is also a limitation - the participants exist within the bubble of my immediate community. The NAUA Connection CIRCLE expanded this to people ranging from coast to cost and into Canada, which brings broader and more varied personalities, perspectives and experiences than I can find in an in-person group.”

"Buddhism and Free Religion―Suffering and Free Religion"

As part of our collaboration with IARF, Rev. Michinori Maruta will speak on the topic of “Suffering and Free Religion.”

Rev. Michinori Maruta of the Japanese Buddhism movement Rissho Kosei-kai has been active in interfaith dialogue and with IARF’s Free Religion Institute. He will be speaking on a foundational teaching of Buddhism.

Suffering—such as aging, sickness, death, and separation from those we love or the things we treasure—is universal. The Pali word for suffering is dukkha, which signifies unsatisfactoriness and stress. The Buddha Dharma teaches how dukkha arises and how it can be ended. The cessation of dukkha, called nirvana, liberation and freedom, is feasible here and now.

NAUA Book Club: "The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves"
August 28th, 4:30 PM PDT

Our August meeting features a discussion of The Rational Optimist: How Prosperity Evolves by Matt Ridley.

This month's discussion will be led by Ed Hudak.

If you are interested in attending, please email Ed Hudak (bookclub@naunitarians.org).

"In a bold and provocative interpretation of economic history, Matt Ridley, the New York Times-bestselling author of Genome and The Red Queen, makes the case for an economics of hope, arguing that the benefits of commerce, technology, innovation, and change—what Ridley calls cultural evolution—will inevitably increase human prosperity. Fans of the works of Jared Diamond (Guns, Germs, and Steel), Niall Ferguson (The Ascent of Money), and Thomas Friedman (The World Is Flat) will find much to ponder and enjoy in The Rational Optimist.

For two hundred years the pessimists have dominated public discourse, insisting that things will soon be getting much worse. But in fact, life is getting better—and at an accelerating rate. Food availability, income, and life span are up; disease, child mortality, and violence are down all across the globe. Africa is following Asia out of poverty; the Internet, the mobile phone, and container shipping are enriching people's lives as never before.

An astute, refreshing, and revelatory work that covers the entire sweep of human history—from the Stone Age to the Internet—The Rational Optimist will change your way of thinking about the world for the better."

Fall Kick-Off to the NAUA Academy:
"Depolarizing Ourselves"
September 9th, 4:30 PM PDT

In our current political climate, much of our conflict stems not from healthy disagreement over policies or philosophy. Instead, it’s generated by the escalating rancor of the polarizing conversations that we often have with others. Braver Angels has created "Depolarizing Ourselves" online workshops to build your skills around de-escalating polarization in your conversations when differences become apparent, and to help you reframe how you view the other side in the face of disagreements around policy issues.

REGISTER
We state our views freely and fully, without fear.

We treat people who disagree with us with honesty, dignity and respect.

We welcome opportunities to engage those with whom we disagree.
We believe all of us have blind spots and none of us are not worth talking to.

We seek to disagree accurately, avoiding exaggeration and stereotypes.

We look for common ground where it exists and, if possible, find ways to work together.

We believe that, in disagreements, both sides share and learn.

In Braver Angels, neither side is teaching the other or giving feedback on how to think or say things differently.

Your Are Invited to the 2025 NAUA Summit!

Come be a part of the Second Annual NAUA Summit from Tuesday, September 30 through the final Sunday, October 4 worship service. While most mid-week sessions are timed for North American evening participation, Friday through Sunday sessions occur throughout the day and should be viewable in most time zones. All sessions will be recorded, and those registered will receive access to the recordings for a full year after the Summit. So even if you are not available on all dates (Sept. 30-Oct. 5), it is still worth registering for later viewing. Participants will also be able to network and chat in the Zoom lobby for several days before, during and after the Summit. So you can still comment, ask questions and participate in discussions virtually on days and time zones around the Summit.

The Summit is designed for NAUA members, friends and anyone in the world who supports liberal religion. You do not need to be a Unitarian to attend!

Member Services Summit Workshop:
"How Are We Doing One Year Later?"

Friday, October 3,
10 AM PST

In preparation for our Summit Workshop, How Are We Doing One Year Later, the Member Services Committee (MSC) has begun to gather their thoughts about what the MSC should focus their efforts on going forward. Naturally, we are hopeful that we will soon be able to launch the MSC webpage, a piece of unfinished business form this past year, and that the number of Regional Groups will continue to grow.

But we have also begun exploring other areas of focus such as programs, discussions, or activities for children and adults that guide or assist people in ethical, moral, and civic responsibility and decision making. These are troubled times, not just in this country or politically, but also globally. In addition, the focus on being a good steward of the earth often gets lost in the day-to-day chaos of our lives. Resultant stress levels are rising. Thus, we have begun to ask, how can NAUA be relevant to and in these times? What can we do to be helpful, useful, or provide support or guidance to our members?

These are some of the questions that we will be asking you in the Breakout Groups during the MSC Summit Workshop on Friday, Oct. 3 (10AM PT).  If you have thoughts about any of this, and would like to share them now, or even after the workshop, we would gladly listen. Please send them to memberservices@naunitarians.org.

We are still hoping that more regions of the country will want to develop regional groups.  If interested in starting a group, please contact us at memberservices@naunitarians.org.
