Mid-September 2025 Announcements & Events

North American Unitarian Association is a member service organization dedicated to supporting and promoting the practice of liberal religion by embracing freedom, reason, and tolerance—rooted in our commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of every person and all peoples.

Greetings, !

NAUA's mission / value statement is "rooted in our commitment to the inherent worth and dignity of every person and all peoples."

"Nonviolence is a powerful and just weapon, which cuts without wounding and ennobles the man who wields it."
Martin Luther King, Jr.

"Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding." Albert Einstein

"Nonviolence is not a garment to be put on and off at will. Its seat is in the heart, and it must be an inseparable part of our being."

Mahatma Gandhi

"Gandhi once declared that it was his wife who unwittingly taught him the effectiveness of nonviolence. Who better than women should know that battles can be won without resort to physical strength? Who better than we should know all the power that resides in noncooperation?"
Barbara Deming

Note: If you've written a poem, designed a work of art, or taken a photograph that might be a good fit for this newsletter and its focus on human dignity and traditional liberal religious values, please consider emailing it to jmkrettek@gmail.com. "One Song - the Science of Oneness"
Sept. 20, 10 AM PT

JD Stillwater will lead the September Service: "One Song - the Science of Oneness."

For millennia mystics and poets have told us that “All is one” and yet we feel ourselves surrounded by separation, antagonism, and isolation! With help from some intrepid dung beetles, science ambassador JD Stillwater takes us on a tour of findings from mainstream science that reveal an underlying wholism in everything, from human bodies to ecosystems to the very fabric of space-time. In short, science agrees: “All is one."

NAUA Academy
"The Science of Consciousness" with Professor Mark Reimers
October 14, 4:30 PM PT

What can science tell us about consciousness? And how will that help?

REGISTER

October's Academy session features a presentation by guest speaker Mark Reimers.

How do the billions of neurons in your head, looking like tangled rice noodles, give rise to consciousness? Can we even define consciousness?

We don’t have a precise definition, but scientists can now measure brain activity during experiences that we think of as “conscious”: deliberation, remembering, noticing, reasoning, inner conflict, and coming awake. Mark Reimers will talk about how scientists measure brain activity, and the limitations of current theories and technology. Then we will discuss whether this effort can really lead us to a scientific understanding of consciousness.

We’ll consider, in discussion groups, questions like: Are we uniquely conscious, but not other animals? Could an A.I. be conscious?

Finally we’ll consider what a science of consciousness could mean for how we live. Will a science of consciousness lead us toward an enlightened society or will it enable precise Machiavellian manipulation?

Please join, and bring a friend!
