Despite the American Thanksgiving day holiday, there are still more NAUA programs to come in November, including Saturday's monthly worship service. Read on to learn more...

Thanksgiving
(author unknown)

The year has turned its circle,
The seasons come and go.
The harvest all is gathered in
And chilly north winds blow.
Orchards have shared their treasures,
The fields, their yellow grain,
So open wide the doorway~
Thanksgiving comes again!

This November, wherever we find ourselves, may we gather with family and friends and give thanks for the fall harvest.

Note: If you've written a poem, designed a work of art, or taken a photograph that might be a good fit for this newsletter and its focus on human dignity and traditional liberal religious values, please consider emailing it to jmkrettek@gmail.com. If we aren't able to use it here, we may request your permission to share it on our Facebook page or via other communications. Thanks!

UU Church of the Philippines' Call for Help

Dear UU Friends and Family,

Warm greetings from the Philippines.

I am writing with a heavy and prayerful heart to share that Canlaon City, Negros Oriental, my beloved hometown, has been badly devastated by Typhoon Tino and the recent earthquakes. This is the place where I grew up with my father, mother and siblings, and where many of my relatives and friends still live.

The situation is heartbreaking. Around 30 people have lost their lives, and there are still many missing. Countless families have lost their homes, and many are struggling without food, clean water, and shelter. My own family — including my father and relatives — are among those affected and in urgent need of help.

At this difficult time, I am humbly appealing to our UU friends and partners in the U.S. to extend your compassion and generosity. Your support will help provide food, clean water, and other essential needs for those most affected. After distributing the relief, I will share a full report and receipts for transparency and accountability.

Our Unitarian Universalist faith teaches that love knows no boundaries, and when we act together in compassion, light overcomes even the darkest times.

Your kindness and solidarity will bring hope and healing to many lives.

Thank you so much for your prayers, care, and generosity.

With deep gratitude and faith,

Rev. Jeremias Jr. B. Bacaling
Director for Religious Freedom and Relations
National Partnership Coordinator | Youth Coordinator | UMA Secretary

Unitarian Universalist Church of the Philippines is an international member of NAUA. It consists primarily of about 20 churches on the Island of Negros Orientale with a Headquarters complex in Dumaguete. They are very poor. If they have churches, they are often without doors or toilet facilities. They originated as a Universalist Church and remain essentially Universalist in theology. Since September, the Philippines have been devastated by four separate typhoons: Bualoi (local name Opong), Ragasa (local name Nando), Kalmaegi (local name Tino) and most recently, Fung-Wong (local name Uwan). Hundreds of people have died during these storms.

The Thursday Connection CIRCLE is accepting new participants. We meet the 1st and 3rd Thursday each month from 9:00 - 10:00 am Pacific Time. If you’d be interested in joining this CIRCLE, please email circles@naunitarians.org

We want to hear from you! What are your ideas?
The CIRCLES Committee is considering new CIRCLES for 2026.

1. Spirituality CIRCLE - We see this possibly two ways:
~ A discussion CIRCLE about Spirituality and Spiritual Ideology
~ A sharing CIRCLE about Spiritual practices, personal spiritual practices, meditation, etc. (more experiential)

2.  Seven Principles CIRCLE
~Deeper discussion of each of the 7 Principles, their meaning, and an examination of putting them into personal practice

3. Respectful & Difficult Listening CIRCLE
~This CIRCLE would be about respectful listening and respectfully challenging your and others' views

We would love to hear your ideas and interests in these CIRCLES and anything new. Please send your feedback and ideas to: circles@naunitariansorg
(It would also be nice to get an idea of what days and times work for most people.)

Monthly Worship Service:
"Freedom from Want"
November 15, 10 AM PT

NAUA conducts a worship service on the third Saturday of every month. Rev. “Twinkle” Marie Manning. will be leading the NAUA November 15th service.

Theme: “Freedom from Want”

This service reviews our capacity to free each other from all kinds of want - and our innate need to do just so.

Twinkle is the contract minister for the Universalist Unitarian Church of Waterville, Maine. She is an author, poet, retreat leader and liturgist, as well as a semi-retired television producer. She served for many years on the core leadership team for UU Women and Religion and is the creator of the UU Talks platform. Her theology is centered in “Living Life as a Prayer.”

Recording of Oct. 18th Worship Service: "Welcoming the Stranger"

Watch the recording

Rev. Holt's Sunday service was so popular that someone not affiliated with NAUA reached out and asked if he could share it with his discussion group. This individual attended our Academy session a few days later.

"Is it okay if I share Rev. Alex Holt's sermon "Welcoming The Stranger" (Oct 18th) with fellow congregants via Zoom 'share' in one of our weekly online discussion groups which I facilitate and host each Tuesday at 6:30pm (EST) on our First Universalist Church of Rochester NY Zoom channel? I've shared other online sermons from our 'sister' congregaton (First Unitarian of Rochester NY) and these 'sharings' seem to be bringing our two communities closer together, with more cooperation, in my experience."

We thank Rev. Holt for his excellent sermon, along with his willingness to share his recording with others outside of NAUA.

Ministers' Monthly Support Meeting
Nov. 20th, 11 AM PT
NAUA ministers and ministerial friends are invited to attend a monthly discussion group for liberal religious ministers who would value a virtual space for fostering collegiality, mutual support, and continuing ministerial exploration as a group. It is important that members of this group retain confidentiality and anonymity. If you are a minister and would like to explore or join this group, please email info@naunitarians.org.

Going forward, the group will meet on the 4th Thursday of each month from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM Pacific Time / 2:00-3:30 PM Eastern Time (same day of the month / later time). In November, the group is meeting a week early due to the Thanksgiving holiday. Rev. Dr. Matthew Shear will lead the meeting and will be using a different Zoom link. Please email Rev. Dr. Shear directly or email info@naunitarians.org for the link.

NAUA Book Club: "Religion for Atheists: A Non-Believer's Guide to the Uses of Religion"
Nov. 20th, 4:30 PM PDT

This month's Book Club will discuss the book "Religion for Atheists: A Non-believer's Guide to the Uses of Religion" by Alain de Botton. Lorraine Day will lead the discussion.

From Amazon: "What if religions are neither all true nor all nonsense? Alain de Botton’s bold and provocative book argues that we can benefit from the wisdom and power of religion—without having to believe in any of it.

"He suggests that rather than mocking religion, agnostics and atheists should instead steal from it—because the world’s religions are packed with good ideas on how we might live and arrange our societies. De Botton looks to religion for insights into how to build a sense of community, make relationships last, overcome feelings of envy and inadequacy, inspire travel, get more out of art, and reconnect with the natural world. For too long non-believers have faced a stark choice between swallowing lots of peculiar doctrines or doing away with a range of consoling and beautiful rituals and ideas. Religion for Atheists offers a far more interesting and truly helpful alternative."

If you are interested in attending, please email Ed Hudak at bookclub@naunitarians.org
